Residential solar, answered.
With solar photovoltaic technology, sunlight is converted into electricity using semiconducting materials in each panel. That electricity is used in your home first, with any surplus exported to the grid under Solar ATAP.
Two ways. First and most importantly, every kWh your panels produce that you use directly is a kWh you don't buy from TNB — that's where most of the saving comes from. Second, surplus you export earns a credit under Solar ATAP at the prevailing Energy Charge, up to your Maximum Allowable Quantity (MAQ = system kWac × 5 sun hours × billing days). Note that ATAP credits are use-it-or-lose-it: unused credit at the end of a billing period is forfeited, which is why we size systems against your actual consumption rather than your roof area.
Typically 7 to 10 years after the SuRIA rebate, depending on your system size, how much of your generation you use directly, and your tariff. Households that use more electricity during daylight hours sit at the shorter end. Rising tariffs shorten it further — the RP4 restructure raised the base tariff by 13.6%. Panels carry a 25-year performance warranty, so the years after payback are the return.
